My Toolbox Medicine Cabinet: Organizing by Emergency

Nothing exposes the weaknesses in an organization system faster than an emergency.

For years, I've kept my medications and first aid supplies in a toolbox instead of a traditional medicine cabinet. It's secure, easy to carry on trips, and keeps everything in one place.

Recently, my husband was splashed with boiling water while cooking. I had everything needed to treat the burn, but in the moment I realized I was digging through supplies instead of grabbing exactly what I needed.

That experience inspired a better system. Using quart-size Ziploc bags and note cards, I organized everything by emergency and what we would need: burns, cuts, pain, cold and flu, itching and bug relief, skin soothing, and stomach problems. I grouped teeth, ear, and allergy in one bag then also have a miscellaneous.

Now, instead of searching for products, we'll reach for the bag that matches the problem. This will also help me know when it's time to restock. It's a simple change that I think will make a big difference, especially when every second count!
